Venice Kept Time Backwards

Inside the Doge’s Palace, a 24-hour clock ran counterclockwise, another measured the heavens, and a forgotten clock keeper was fired — only to be summoned back when the machinery burned.

There is a tendency among watch enthusiasts to romanticize old clocks.

We see gilding, Roman numerals and a hand-cut dial and immediately imagine some purer age of mechanical craftsmanship — a world before quartz movements, smartphones and atomic time.

The clocks hanging inside the Sala del Senato of Venice’s Palazzo Ducale deserve more than that.

Because these were not simply beautiful objects.

They were instruments of the state.

And one of them kept time backwards.


THE ROOM WHERE VENICE WATCHED THE CLOCK

Walk into the Senate Chamber of the Doge’s Palace and almost everything competes for your attention.

Gold climbs the walls.

Monumental paintings crowd the room.

Dark carved figures emerge from an architectural framework so elaborate that the room seems less constructed than accumulated over centuries.

This was not subtle architecture.

It was the stage set of a republic that wanted visitors — ambassadors, rivals and its own ruling class — to understand exactly where they were.

At the center of that world sat the Venetian Senate, also called the Pregadi.

The institution dated back to the 13th century and became one of the principal organs responsible for the economic and political machinery of the Republic: finance, manufacturing, commerce and foreign affairs.

The senators seated here belonged largely to Venice’s wealthy patrician families.

Ships left the lagoon because of decisions made in rooms like this.

Trade routes were defended.

Money moved.

Diplomatic relationships were made and broken.

Military questions were argued.

And while those arguments stretched into the evening, the Republic kept a clock on the wall.

Not a clock like ours.


A DAY WITH 24 HOURS — AND NO MIDNIGHT

Look carefully at the first photograph.

The dial is divided into 24 separate hours, numbered in Roman numerals.

There is only one hand.

And the numbers appear to be going the wrong way.

They are not.

The clock belongs to a world in which the definition of a day itself was different.

In the traditional Italian system of timekeeping — ora italica — the new day was reckoned from sunset, rather than from midnight.

Twenty-four therefore represented the completion of the day near the following sunset.

For the people using it, this made practical sense.

Time was still intimately connected to available daylight.

If the clock told you that it was the eighteenth hour, six hours remained before the end of the 24-hour cycle. A merchant, sailor, laborer or traveler did not merely know what “time” it was.

He could understand where he stood in relation to the disappearance of the sun.

There was a consequence.

Sunset moves.

The clock therefore belonged to a conception of time that had to remain tied to the natural world rather than simply marching forever against an abstract, standardized grid.

To modern eyes, the dial feels alien.

To a 16th-century Venetian, ours might have seemed equally arbitrary.

We decided that the day changes while almost everyone is asleep.

They watched it die with the sun.


THE MAN RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING IT ALIVE

Mechanical timekeeping has always had another side that collectors understand immediately.

Maintenance.

Someone had to wind the mechanism.

Someone had to regulate it.

Someone had to repair worn components.

Someone had to notice when the machine was no longer telling the truth.

Archival records put a man named Bernardino Pancin — also recorded as Penzin — in that role by 1534.

Documents cited by historians indicate that his father had constructed the mechanism several years earlier.

Bernardino inherited something far less glamorous than the mythology we now attach to Renaissance horology:

the service department.

And apparently he was not especially good at answering his tickets.

In 1551, the Council of Ten stripped him of his monthly salary because the clocks were not receiving the daily attention expected of him.

The warnings continued.

Finally, on December 30, 1562, Bernardino was removed from the job for persistent neglect.

That should have been the end of his place in horological history.

It wasn't.


THEN THE PALACE BURNED

In 1574, fire tore through this section of the Doge’s Palace.

The clocks were damaged.

And suddenly Venice had a problem considerably larger than an unreliable employee.

It had sophisticated machinery that needed to work again — machinery old enough and specialized enough that institutional authority could not simply order a replacement part.

So in the autumn of 1574, officials called Bernardino Penzin back.

The man Venice had dismissed twelve years earlier was brought in to repair the clocks.

The historical research offers a beautifully simple explanation:

he may have been the only person left who truly understood how to restart the mechanism his family knew so intimately.

There is something wonderfully familiar about this story.

Anyone who has ever owned an obscure vintage watch understands it.

Documentation disappears.

Parts become impossible to replace.

Modifications accumulate.

And suddenly the most important person in the room is not the person with the highest title.

It is the person who remembers how the machine works.

Nearly five hundred years later, Bernardino's story may be one of the earliest versions of a sentence still repeated in workshops around the world:

“I know a guy.”


THE CLOCK WE SEE IS ALSO A HISTORY OF REPAIR

Calling the object on the wall simply a “16th-century clock” hides part of its story.

Like a great vintage watch, it survived by changing.

Research into the Doge’s Palace indicates that the clock case was rebuilt by Giovanni Paolo Gloder in 1755.

During the 19th century, the appearance of the dial changed dramatically. The old 24-hour arrangement was replaced with wooden dials showing twelve hours.

Only in the late 20th century were the Senate and College clocks returned to something resembling their 16th-century 24-hour appearance, with 24 dark hour sectors once again surrounding the dial.

In other words, what survives is not an untouched time capsule.

It is arguably something more interesting.

It is a machine with a biography.

Built.

Maintained.

Neglected.

Damaged.

Repaired.

Modified.

Reinterpreted.

Restored.

That distinction matters.

The obsession with absolute originality can sometimes cause collectors to misunderstand old machines. Objects that actually worked for centuries rarely escaped centuries of intervention.

Survival is not the absence of repair.

Often, repair is the reason something survived.


THEN VENICE PUT THE HEAVENS BESIDE IT

The second photograph shows the companion dial.

Instead of 24 hours, twelve signs of the zodiac surround a blue celestial field.

It appears similar enough to the time clock that the two feel like a deliberate pair.

Historically, however, they may not be twins at all.

Research suggests that the zodiac clock was added later.

Documents concerning the 1574 fire mention the timekeeping clocks but apparently do not describe this zodiac instrument. In another document from December 1585, only one clock is mentioned in connection with this section of the Senate Chamber.

Yet by 1603, a description of the palace praises another clock that displayed the celestial signs.

That gives us a tantalizing window for its creation.

There is another clue.

Look at the hand.

It incorporates a stork.

That matters because cicogna is the Italian word for stork — and Pasquale Cicogna served as Doge of Venice from 1585 until 1595.

For that reason, researchers have proposed that the zodiac clock may have been created during Cicogna's reign.

It is an elegant theory.

But it remains a theory.

And that distinction is worth preserving.

Good history becomes more interesting, not less, when we admit where the documentary trail ends.


HOURS ON ONE SIDE. THE HEAVENS ON THE OTHER.

Taken together, the two dials represent something larger than mechanical ingenuity.

The first places human activity inside the cycle of a day.

The second places that day inside the cycle of the heavens.

Hours.

Sunset.

Seasons.

Zodiac.

Government.

Commerce.

Navigation.

They belonged to a maritime republic whose wealth depended on understanding position, distance, season and time.

Venetian ships crossed the Mediterranean and sailed far beyond it. Merchants operated across enormous distances. Information moved by ship, horse and messenger. Navigation depended upon astronomical observation long before satellites could tell a sailor his position to within a few feet.

Against that world, the two Senate clocks begin to feel less like decoration.

They become symbols of orientation.

One tells you when you are.

The other reminds you where you are within a larger cycle.

The same impulse eventually finds its way into the objects collectors wear today.

A GMT hand.

A world timer.

A moonphase.

A perpetual calendar.

A chronograph.

A dive bezel.

Different complications answer different versions of the same ancient question:

Where am I in time?


BEFORE THE WATCH BECAME LUXURY

Standing in front of these clocks also exposes something the modern watch industry occasionally forgets.

Timekeeping existed before it was luxury.

Before watches became status objects, they were solutions to problems.

Before marketing departments invented stories about adventure, mechanical instruments were actually carried into environments where knowing the hour, elapsed time, direction or celestial cycle mattered.

Railway watches existed because trains could collide.

Marine chronometers existed because navigators could become lost.

Military watches existed because operations had to be coordinated.

Dive watches existed because oxygen was finite.

The lineage is not perfectly straight, and these Venetian clocks are not simply oversized wristwatches.

But the underlying idea is unmistakable.

Mechanical timekeeping began as equipment.

These machines served a function inside the operation of a state.

The gold came afterward.

Or, in Venice's case, perhaps simultaneously.


THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS THE HUMAN ONE

There are extraordinary watches sitting untouched in safes today.

They will emerge decades from now looking almost exactly as they did when they entered.

That is one kind of preservation.

The clocks of the Doge's Palace tell another story.

They were used.

They demanded maintenance.

They were neglected.

They survived fire.

They were repaired by a man who had previously been fired from maintaining them.

Their appearance changed.

Craftsmen whose names are nearly forgotten opened them, altered them and put them back into service.

Centuries later, conservators attempted to recover something closer to the form their Renaissance users would have recognized.

That is not a flaw in their provenance.

That is their provenance.

Mechanical objects become interesting because human beings depend on them, damage them, repair them and refuse to let them die.

A watch without a story is an instrument.

A watch with enough years behind it becomes evidence.


FIVE CENTURIES LATER

Today, the senators are gone.

The Venetian Republic itself disappeared in 1797.

The fleets that carried its power across the Mediterranean vanished with it.

The political arguments once held beneath these clocks have been reduced to archives, paintings and history books.

But the dials remain.

One still confronts the viewer with 24 Roman numerals running in a direction modern eyes insist must be wrong.

The other still surrounds its hand with the zodiac.

Neither needs to function as it once did to perform one final job.

They remind us that timekeeping has never simply been about knowing the hour.

Every clock is an agreement.

Every calendar is a system.

Every dial is a way of imposing order on something human beings cannot stop.

We divide it.

Number it.

Standardize it.

Measure it to fractions of a second.

Put it into brass cases, ship chronometers, cockpit instruments and 40-millimeter wristwatches.

We build machines in the hope of mastering it.

And still it passes.

Venice understood that five hundred years ago.

The Republic built clocks into the walls of government.

Then put the heavens beside them.

Different century. Different scale. Same obsession.
